I have had a chalk menu board for years, but recently I decided to update it’s look with some extra scrapbook paper and an old frame I had laying around. I used some sticky chalk board paper (leftover from another project) and voila a menu board for $0:)

I really want some cowboy boots. I have had three pairs of cowboy boots in my life, my love of boots of all kind are well known, but I haven’t had a pair of cowboy style in a few years, and I am hankerin’ (sorry but I had to) for some!

nordstrom has these right now…love them!

Anthropologie look alike tray

Anthropologie sold a serving tray called One Lump or Two (there is also a lamp) I loved, but it was out of my price range. Today when I went to drool over it again it was gone, but I found a blog where a clever person had made her own copy cat tray (thanks annie from adorkableannie.blogspot.com). So I quickly pulled out my antique milk glass a tube of krazy glue and made my own! The one from Anthropologie was over $100.00 – mine was $0. Annie I love you

Honey Wheat Bread

After talking to my friend Tami I was reminded that during my first five years of marriage I made everything from scratch, and I mean EVERYTHING. I still make a lot of things, but prepackaged breads have inched their way into my pantry. So she spurred me on (that is why I love her) to start making bread again. So far we are one week in and it is going great! Who knows if I can keep it up or not, but I’m loving it so far! Rapid rise yeast makes it SO much faster, and it’s only a $1 a package at Walmart!

I am in love with the Duggars from 18 kids and counting. This week I was reading their family rules, adding some of them to our family rules. I was happy to realize the last rule they had is actually the same rule we use as our first one (as for the rest of the rules, well…there’s a reason they are famous and the Bullis’ aren’t, we could benefit from following them!). It is an easy way to remember the greatest commandment given to us by Jesus in Matthew 22, to love God with our whole hearts and love others. J.O.Y. stands for Jesus first, others second, yourself last.

My kids could say “Love God Love others” at a very young age, its and easy phrase to memorize, but much harder to actually achieve. Jesus said all of the teachings of the prophets and the laws hang on this. It is so much easier to remember that phrase as opposed to every law and commandment ever given, and if we are doing these things we will be following them. I am sure I have blogged about this at least three times, so if you follow this blog you know how important it is to me.

So I was sad today to realize that again I have failed at this simple request. I love God with all of my heart, that is the easy part, but I have struggled again with loving others at all times. I love easily to those that love me back. Why is it so hard to love those that persecute you, or just don’t like you? Why can’t I be Jesus and even love those that throw me on the “cross”? He willingly hung there for those that hammered the nails, so that they could spend eternity with Him.

So today as I reread these wonderful verses I am finding the love for others in the only place I can get it, from the designer of love Himself!

Two are better than one

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 have been on my mind lately. I love to study the deep meaning of scripture, but I REALLY love the verses that are simple, clear and to the point! Solomon wrote this (okay some people disagree with that, but I think it was him) at a time in his life when he was looking around and seeing this earth and human nature exactly as it was. Due to the state of our human world, at times this book of the bible can be down right depressing. And yet we can completely identify with the words written here.

In the midst of all of it you find these verses that say “two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall one will lift up his companion but woe to him who is alone when he falls for he has no one to help him up.”

These words are down right upbeat compared to most of Ecclesiastes. All week I have been reminded of the people that have labored with me. It’s true the reward is much larger and more enjoyable when you have someone to share it with. But mostly when I read these verses I see faces. Faces of people God has used to pick me up when I have fallen. Last week I realized pride keeps me from admitting when I fall. Pride has also made it impossible to reach up my head and my hands and ask for help up at times. In spite of my pride God sent people “companions” to reach down and pull me up, and I thank Him for that.

Verse twelve says a threefold cord isn’t easily broken. I believe that means you, plus the companion God has placed with you at that time, plus God himself cannot be broken or overpowered. God has sent different companions at different times for different tasks. His intimate, encompassing, love never ceases to amaze me. And for the obedient people who faithfully pull me up when I need it, I pray a special blessing on you today.

The Doughnut Man

There is a face so familiar to me that I could perfectly describe it to you, yet I don’t even know the name that belongs to that face. Some have described him as gruff or too busy but those words don’t describe him for me. The man who runs the doughnut shop has been an important part of much of my adult life. As I write this my mind is racing with all of the times the doughnut man and I have shared the moments of my life.

I first discovered the doughnut man’s shop when I was pregnant, I had resisted sugar for an entire year. I didn’t want to indulge, and eat the white stuff, but in the sixth month of pregnancy I realized I had deprived my unborn son one of life’s most enjoyable things. So I bought a doughnut for us to share. I know you are amazed at my selfless act, what can I say, I’m practically a saint. I smiled when Jackson high-fived my rib cage (I’m pretty sure that is why he suddenly started moving), and my love affair of jelly doughnuts began.

The doughnut man and I saw a lot of each other during the remainder of my pregnancy, and soon Jackson saw the man that had made his last few months so pleasurable. Although he could barely open his eyes I think I saw him give the doughnut man a thumbs up. The doughnut man was there for me all that summer while my husband was out of the country, town, or state for work and I had to preach four times a week to cover for him and still do my job. It was then I discovered that people like your preaching a lot better when you provide them with deep fried sugary pastry. Not to mention when your alone with a newborn and a six year old for weeks at a time, doughnuts make you feel a little bit happier, and makes the six year old smile as she bites into that sugary goodness with her missing front teeth.

My mouth smiles as I think of the day the doughnut man gave me two boxes of doughnuts free of charge. I went into his shop and ordered more than my usual, “For a meeting?” he asked. ”No”, I said, “my husband is sick in the hospital” and then I said the words I had told no one, to this day I have no idea why I blurted out the words, “they say he may die.”. Tears quietly and steadily rolled down my face and he looked at me sympathetically and waved me out the door without letting me pay. I took those doughnuts to the hospital for the visitors that came to Dave’s room, all day the boxes were a gracious reminder of a familiar stranger who’s kindness lifted my spirits that day.

I was happy to inform the doughnut man a few days later that Dave was alive and well, the doughnut man isn’t the most expressive guy but he smiled and nodded his head. Over the next few years the doughnut man faithfully filled my doughnut orders, three dozen for sunday school, ten dozen for junior high group, four dozen for staff meeting, always throwing in a sprinkle for Jackson free of charge. Now my orders are much smaller cheese bagels and glazed for the kids, no more dozens but still delicious.

The doughnut man represents so many people we take for granted, the people that make our lives a little easier and more enjoyable. So thank you doughnut man for the class parties you’ve saved, the Saturday mornings we’ve shared and the times you’ve made life much easier for this soccer mom. But most of all thank you for always being there, in a world where everything changes it’s nice to go somewhere that never does.

up too late

I let my kids stay up really late in the summer, every night as I start to put them to bed, I find I don’t want the long days of summer to end so I end up suggesting a movie or game that will prolong the day. Tonight was no different after tucking in and prayers I found myself letting the kids get up and watch a dvr’d episode of Wipeout. We are all up way too late!

I love hanging out with my kids, they are funny, sweet and incredibly great!! Tonight as I snuggled them we had talks of wiggly teeth, friends, upcoming trips and moving. Tessa is always willing to share her heart with me and Jackson makes us laugh with his silliness and wit.

Being with those two is always the perfect ending to my day, a reminder of why I am here and where my priorities are. As I looked into four blue eyes tonight all was right in the world and my blue eyes got a little damp just looking at them! I love staying up too late….
